= phylum Porifera
Bword porifera is derived from Latin word Porus - pores, Ferro - to bear
1 The animals are also called sponges just because thousands of pores present on body surface and these pores are called ostia
2 These animals are sessile, living attached to rocks , coral and hard surface
3 The body is perforated by pores and canal
4 They have cellular level of organization
5 Their body skeleton made up of Ca Co3, protein , silica
6 They are sedentary organism ranging in size from 1cm to 200cm
7 Digestion takes place with in the cell (intracellular)
8 Reproduction is of both types asexual and sexual, Asexual reproduction is by means of "Buds" and "Gemmules" formation. Sexual reproduction is by means of sperm and ova
9 The central cavity is known as "Spongocoel"
11 And the cell which is surrounded by Spongocoel called "Choanocytes which is responsible for digestion
12 Water canal system is highly developed Exchange of gases, Intake of food and Excretion also
