violence and injustice with women

When the world comes to a standstill, it’s time for someone to say what they feel. For most people, this doesn’t mean that they want to hurt someone, it just means they think that something needs to change. However, this is not always the case in America. There are many times when violence against women, especially black women, is ignored or even brushed aside. Whether it be because of how often violence has been associated with being female or black or being in a poor area, people tend to view those who support a woman for her right to choose as “lazy” and “selfish” (and that’s what I always felt). This can make it hard for any person looking for help to reach out to them, but I would like to take a moment to break down why this happens and how this can be avoided. When we talk about violence against women, we need to be careful that these words don’t imply that we are talking about all women, but rather that we are discussing domestic violence. Being domestic means having a husband or a boyfriend or both. Domestic abuse is different from sexual assault; there are many ways that domestic violence fits into sex-based violence: control over power, money, or even access to health care. Domestic abuse can also include things such as physical or mental abuse, which can range from simple slaps to choking or suffocating.

When you put your hand on top of an abuser’s hand (whether it be verbally or physically), they have their freedom and their choice; however, when you place your hands on their face and scream at them, they now have no power over you and anything they do now becomes a liability if they have to respond. What could happen then when you call them names because they don’t know where they put that one finger? So why does domestic violence become so normalized? Why isn’t it more recognized? Here are three reasons:

1) People love being used, and if they get their comeuppance, they are willing to get it again.

2) We only see men as violent toward women. Because it’s easy, everyone thinks they are. The reality is though that violence against women comes in every color, ethnicity, and gender. It does not come close to equal amounts, so most of us don’t try to recognize what we see. Yes, people who are in jobs or live in poverty may experience domestic violence, but so is anyone in another society, and how can we tell? They don’t care about themselves, they care about the children. The sad thing is you can’t always judge whether or not someone is going to be a good parent or a bad parent, and I believe that’s what makes domestic violence look so much worse than it really is. In some cases, we can turn the tables around and say “well maybe she didn’t do it by choice, but it was there and she got her comeuppance”. But that’s still not saying much. A lot of women were forced into it and people forget to realize that they aren’t the ones doing it to them. You have enough work on your plate, thank you? Maybe take a step back, breathe, and appreciate the situation you are placed in because the choices you made, are probably ones that should remain between yourself and life.

3) Victims of domestic violence are blamed themselves for their partner’s actions. This is due to shame and guilt, which lead to self-blame. I believe what victim blaming does well is not only take away our agency but take away empathy and understanding. How can we understand a behavior when we cannot say what we did wrong. We blame ourselves and the perpetrator as to why we’re hurting the other person. By telling ourselves “I did the same thing to my parents when I was little,” we are taking a stance towards our family and our friends. Instead of viewing the perpetrator as a monster, we are viewing ourselves as victims. If you’re a mother or father of a child or you’ve ever had a child, I hope you know how damaging your thoughts are when you have a negative thought or thought about yourself. When you start thinking negatively about yourself, you leave yourself vulnerable to anyone who is trying to take something away from you. Stop thinking about the mistakes you made, because everyone makes mistakes, and they will too. Try it instead by looking beyond your situation to see why you made the decision you made and find ways to fix them. Be kind to yourself and your feelings. Don’t spend all your energy on making excuses. Focus on getting better and taking advantage of opportunities. Sometimes we hear about people committing suicide over mental illness, but it’s often because they’ve taken a chance to commit suicide rather than because they have depression. So you cannot take part of the reason for suicides away because of the medical nature of the problem. Embrace yourself, embrace your past, and embrace where you came from. Helping someone else is far from selfish, and if you really cannot help your partner, please go see a therapist to talk through your issues so you know which path to take. Do not let your partner know that you want them to take responsibility and that you want them to know they need counseling. Let them know that you want them to think positive and that you’ve changed and that they should see that you are safe to talk to. Keep doing everything you can to make them comfortable and let them have any sense of privacy in whatever type of conversation you can have without feeling guilty about yourself or your relationship. These steps can open up new doors in your relationship or lead you down the appropriate path toward healing.

In order to prevent domestic violence from escalating quickly and permanently, there need to be many more conversations surrounding it or it will continue to escalate. Just being aware of it and recognizing it is important, but there needs to be more awareness. Even though it might be difficult for some people to admit when someone is hurting them personally, we need to recognize that our own well-being is affected by people’s views of us. As human beings, our needs are going to change in relation to how we show up to the situation we are in. While speaking to our abusive partners on the phone with no hope is not helpful or realistic, being kind to each other and doing what we can to be more present and mindful of what is happening is important. Speak up whenever someone tries to hurt us, but don’t stay quiet just long enough to keep it from escalating. Remember that we know what our actions are and that’s all they are, so we can take ownership of our impact on each other.

We should not allow others to force us to do things against our will simply because we’re scared or we are uncomfortable. We have a right to determine how to be happy. We have a right to make our own decisions regarding our bodies and our surroundings. We shouldn’t be subjected to harmful behaviors because of who we are, our background, or our background as young adults. We are each responsible for how we view ourselves, and the reality is that is all we are. We need to learn that and stop judging and worrying about ourselves or people who think we are more deserving than we are. All that will eventually add up, make you feel worse, and it will probably end up affecting you permanently. No matter how much someone loves you, don’t try to hide them or act ashamed of yourself. It will only make them continue to push and push and eventually lose control. It doesn’t help to be strong or confident when you’re broken, and we do not have control of anything that goes on outside of ourselves. The best thing we can do for someone who is struggling listens and encourage them to speak up, and remember those aren’t the only people they hurt. We shouldn’t stay in the dark and try to avoid being emotional and hurtful.

We need to be honest with each other, especially in relationships. That starts in childhood and continues throughout adulthood. We need to accept each other for who we are in front of the mirror and try to stop being so quick to judge. Don’t force yourself to be perfect, and don’t try to protect a person who doesn’t love you. Always be open to listening because sometimes you can’t put your fingers on what is actually happening, so the best thing you can do is be here for them. Never try to play favorites, and if you can’t stop yourself from showing them the affection they will eventually lose interest. There is no excuse for abusing someone for doing something as harmless as making dinner, but it’s nice to say thanks as a compliment as well.

Lastly, don’t compare your relationship and your abuse. Comparing yourself or an abuser to someone else is toxic and can create trauma. Both the abuser and the victim need to feel loved. One of the main reasons why we are abused is because we don’t feel loved. Our abusers are usually more emotionally intelligent than the victims, so they know exactly what I am talking about. Yet, I wonder if there is more to being a victim of domestic violence than just being a victim. Is there more to the pain someone feels when we harm them than just the physical harm? Or the actual harm? My answer would be NO. The fear and anxiety of the consequences that come with being a victim of domestic abuse could very well stem from a deeper fear and anxiety of not being loved. Maybe someone can only truly express the love the victim feels in return for being pushed or pulled down, but some people can

"A Girl Is Being Nurtured In The Irony Of Fate" by Raimal Raja Kolhi

"A Girl Is Being Nurtured In The Irony Of Fate"
“The revolution will come with the women’s voice”
At a time when women’s rights are threatened around the world, Pakistan is ranked as one of the most dangerous countries for women.
According to a report released by the UN on international women’s day, Pakistan tops the list of countries holding prejudice against women the report states that at least 99.81 of the population holds at least one sexist bias. Pakistan is considered the sixth most dangerous country in terms of women's rights violations in the world.
"A brother stabbed his sister five times and killed her mercilessly. He confessed that he killed her because she was talking to a boy"
"Husband and her mother-in-law tortured her and shaved her head before kicking her out"
"A girl was burned alive by order of a Jirga"
"Women are only for amusement to man"
Despite the risk, women are seeking freedom women are putting their lives on the line of fighting oppression and demanding equal rights.
In this society asking the girl about her marriage is considered to defect girls don't possess the right to decide on their future, and they don't right have to go against the selection made by the male. Interference of female in male's recommendation, a decision considered to be disobedience. The first injustice that takes place is when a girl refuses to marry someone neither her refusal nor her choice is given any importance. And this is a very common event, everywhere, mostly countryside. If any girl doesn't like a boy or that relative's home and she refuses those Alliances (Relatedness), non will give any importance to her refusal. Get ignorance of her refusal. And daunt her to be calm. That girl's talk is postponed. This is a very common thing that the marriage of child with, arranged in his childhood until the children reach the age of marriage, they are not allowed to smell of their marriage fixation with. Who is their relationship with?
These incidents are very common in the Hindu community like Kolhi, Bheel, Rebari et cetera these people arrange their marriages at an early age even groom and bride don't aware of, that with whom her/his marriage going to take place. Their relationships are settled by their elders in their childhood and sometimes and happen like this that girl’s marriages are arranged the double aged man of her. At this age, girls don't have any understanding of anything they are unaware of traditions and customs, and on their mistakes, their family-in-law start infraction by saying that this girl doesn't have moral, don't have sense.
Their childhood growing somewhere still in a corner of their heart. Think and wish that I could have a better childhood. but haven't happened. On her wedding day didn't know what was going on, she was just excited about her wedding dress
As she was being whisked away, she said to them, "Now that I have sat in the car I should go back home right? What am I doing here? Whose house am I going to? This isn't my house, my house is back. She might think someone had stolen her toys, it feels like all her tore had been stolen as that her childhood was lost.
In rare it happens like that due to marrying in insufficient age they don't get a baby. Some years later many of them are awarded a pleasure of a child. She doesn't know what happens to her but she is happy with a child, thinking that God has bestowed her new toy. One to two it feels like she got everything and got that happiness forever. But as time passes, her-in-law and her mother-in-law's behaviour changes. for 20 years, she put up with all sorts of abuse and she felt imprisoned every moment and then it become increasingly intolerable. The husband thinks that he does everything; the wife does do not anything all day. By saying that he targets her with many kinds of violence and taunts her on everything. Even though we can see that she get more physical and mental disturbance in her life than her husband. Caring child, looking after cattle( if have), washing pots two times a day, washing clothes of the whole family, sweepings, cleaning and helping her husband in every work that she can. Half of Pakistan and the world's women work in different places for her family livings I used to go that to Thar (kaajer) passing bricks Kelin (bricks company ) I have seen women work more than men for her family living all the day, having no much income to buy new clothes they are in rags. Still, the husband says to her what the hell do you do all day?
Domestic violence
Domestic violence is a topic that has been hotly debated to date. This is a topic that has been around for centuries. When we talk about domestic violence, it includes domestic women also included men. There is a psychological disease. In our society, it is a bad habit to speak badly immorally, to be cruel to her and violate physically and it is understood that we are doing a great thing. And this is promoted to boldness. Saying that we are strong men because we keep pressing the women in our house. But it is very wrong and erroneous to do all this, the woman is not a father's servant of any.
with whom you want to as you want, beat her badly. Never. Remember that she is your wife, not a maid or slave. Equal to out at home. She has left her parent's house and come to suffer your oppression? No.
In 2016, the Punjab government made a law, the Punjab Protection Of Women Against Violence Act. It states that if a woman is violated and if she wants to go to court under section 4-12 if she calls on given numbers of that team then women protection officers will come to the doorsteps and will look into things and protect that woman. And Punjab has launched that application, Punjab safe Cities Authority. And women can protect themselves through it. If women are tortured physically in that kind of violation, Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) section 332, 333, 334-36, L1, L2. will be related to the violation that how much violated either slapped or injured her.
These laws are implemented and their sentences will be from 2,3 months to 25th years imprisonment. It depends on the extent to which type they have been subjected to torture. 506 PPC if death threats are made. BUT it usually happens like this that women endure all and live their lives in the suffering but don't get a divorce, thinking that may I have some rest and peaceful life after children have grown up. Some women who raise their hands after suffering a lot eventually get a divorce. In our society divorced women, those who get a divorce are often targeted by society in different perceptions and make it hard to live their lives. women who get a divorce, their remarriages often happen with the old man (double aged ). in rare cases it happens that she has seemed to be comfortable. some times it is like this, that widows or divorced woman's remarriage become more severe than earlier. her husband and mother-in-law taunt her on everything, every mistake, that you have killed/humiliated/eaten your ex-husband or made his life so hard. now what the hell you come to do here to us. in rare cases, their remarriages often become a comfortable zone, an example for others. I am not saying that in every first marriage she suffers from many difficulties. No! but in some cases, it happens. some women get poison to suicide or hang themselves, adopting that no one is willing to listen to us. there should be someone, who can speak on behalf of us, because if a woman feels ashamed or hesitant then she tends not to disclose her issue. there should be, but non is. some girls whose parents have died either in their childhood or in adult, daughters are often handed undertaking of paternal uncles and maternal uncles or aunties (father's sister). their uncles get them married once in a good or bad family. then if some matters arise with her and she is subjected to cruelty. No one takes notice of her talk, and become she disappointed considering an orphan. and spend his entire life with that. but some families-in-law leave her and she comes to live with her paternal/maternal parents. her aunt taunts her we are humiliated with you what did you come for. a few days later their relatives get bored and try to kick her out, and sometimes girls are targeted by their uncles and cousins, sexual harassed. girls leave relatives' houses by seeing a change in relatives' behaviours. but there is no any for them to take care of their children and her. in that case in hunger she walks out for earning slices of bread. sometimes she wonders far and far for the job but doesn't get a respectable job.
Sometimes those women get a job at a peaceful place. Sometimes women get jobs but in the wrong location where she considered a prostitute, Boss or owner of that institute or organization give her job for his sexual desire.
At some places boss harassed her, few women leave those jobs but a small number don't and bear all these forcibly and are compelled to do all this for her children. Some women couldn't get a job anywhere and become a prostitute to feed their children.
Nobody is a prostitute by birth, circumstances make her do it, poverty compels her to get into the dark. Their destiny is to become a prostitute
Male Dominant Society
Whenever a woman raises her voice, they accuse her of having an immoral character.
Women who raise their hands against male-dominant society are being warned or daunt/intimidate to take a step back. It has evolved to such an extent that nobody can challenge the decision of male Jirga. There is a misconception that women don't have leadership skills or we say that our women are oppressed and can't decide for themselves, so that is wrong, we shouldn't think that a woman is incapable of making decisions.
In 2013, women have announced the formation of the Khwendo Women'sJirga through the media against male violence with his wife. To show that we too have our Jirga one of the members told that the majority of cases they faced, have to do with the domestic violation.
"her-in-law beats her openly in the street, one day they tied her to a chair and whipped her"
it's like she has been imprisoned for the last two years.
Women went out to the old man and told him, join our Jirga they would say. "women aren't capable of running a Jirga". The tribal male elders ridiculed women and considered it as a joke, they said this drama will last a few days and that's it. The marriage of minors, rape, sexual aggression and human torture are common practices.
In 1990, Syeda Ghulam Fatima set up the bonded labour liberation front an organization that works to eradicate bonded and child labour in Pakistan over the past 27 years. Fatima estimated she has freed more than 80,000 slaves from-bonded labour.
This is a really strange concept to ensure that the slaves remain weak and can be bought and retained.
I have a story related to a girl from swat valley. That a girl is married off with a boy who later goes to Saudi Arabia for the job. The girl's father-in-law who was also her real uncle( blood relation) raped and abuses her multiple times for nine months. Her husband was working in Saudi Arabia at the time. When the girl tried to raise her voice to let relatives know of her ordeal.
The girl's mother-in-law told her husband "she humiliated you"
Kill her, she was locked in a room and stabbed with a knife 52times. She was 12 years old when she was married off.
Later on, women Jirga heard about her and brought her justice. Women Jirga got her a settlement of roughly 30-35 lac from her family-in-law.
She told that " initially my-in-laws were nice, but in the last four years, they began to change. In the last year, the beating began and I had a miscarriage. She got a divorce and had her father-in-law banished from the city.
There are quite a few cases that have a mark on one's heart and mind when you see what these young girls are put through, it makes you weep.
In the dominancy of man and violation of man, there was a movement, women become angry at the continuous attack on their rights. They were angry at the increasing harassment in the public spaces. They decided they needed a platform with a minimum program where they brought together the maximum number of voices.
On the 12th February 1983 Farida along with scores of other women carried out a historic march in Lahore. Police brutality was rife and several women were jailed for that march, but this didn't dampen their spirits and their activism. women started raising their hands against male dominant society named it "Women March" (Aurat March).
The earliest version was purportedly a "Women's Day" organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909.
This is being celebrated every year in March by these slogans
“My body, my will”
"Why are you afraid of my self-determination?"
"Jab tak aurat tang rahay gi, jang rahay gi, jang rahay gi
"Keep your dick pics to yourself"
"If you like the headscarf so much, tie it around your eyes"
"Nazar teri gandi aur purdah mein keroun"
("Why must I wear a veil to keep you from ogling?")
The first march was held on 8 March 2018 in Karachi Pakistan.
Women marches for women's rights, violence, injustice. They protest for their lives to live free. Its often states that " a happy woman is always a lucky woman"
Lots of injustice with girls, girls are not allowed to go to school out the class five. They have to sit at home, if they have finished matric they aren't going to college. They can't study they can't work. I see this day and day out it just annoyed me that their parents are pleased to give preference to the boys and girls are looking at everybody's faces and hoping that she will get permission to do something on some days."A Girl Is Being Nurtured In The Irony Of Fate"
“The revolution will come with the women’s voice”

I see this day and day out it just annoyed me that their parents are pleased to give preference to the boys and girls are looking at everybody's faces and hoping that she will get permission to do something on some days.

Impact of dramas in society

It is beyond to doubt that drama is a kind of literature, which exposes the circumstances and truth of society but now a day that I have been observing that dramas keep the worst influence. The worst dramas that have been a bad impact on society, traditions, culture and ethics. And how it has damage the minds of people? How it destroys culture and society? As for as Pakistani drama are concerned, there was a standard from the beginning The eternal, perpetual dramas, people who still remember. But over the last twenty years in the Pakistani drama’s industry has changed a lot. The word “drama” was derived from the Greek word “dran” which means “do an act” and it was used in the early 16th century. And the real purpose of dramas was to improve the characters, build confidence and entertain viewers. But sad to say that its the purpose to give amusement to viewers, entertain to viewers is no more exist in dramas except business and diverting people toward the dark. The Pakistani drama industry does not know, it is unknown to the reality that what will impact this in society, on culture, traditions, and ethics. There are many dramas in which morality has been violated. And every drama brings a new way of committing the crime. And you know, that in drama smoking, drinking and other toxic drugs are common. Drama industry has no any knowledge of greater impacts on little children and the young generation, and in dramas often shown that how a girl from a strict family without telling her parents that she can run her affairs secretly and how without informed to her family can go in parties. And not only that but much more, that one girl/boy can keep affairs and how to handle more than one affairs at a time. And how to make someone else responsible for saving yourself and by using necromancy (black magic) how can our desires be fulfilled, how to kidnapping, how to murder, these all things teach us by dramas and movies. The shameless thing is that the rapist is also the hero in some dramas and movies, so this drama has a great impact on our psychologically, mentally and morally Whenever we talk about suicide cases and rape cases in the country it happens due to these types of nonsense dramas. that are dramas that teach, how to convince parents by blackmailing and committing suicide. drama viewers children, women, young and elder are all very much influenced by the characters and story shown in the dramas. they connect their emotions with dramas and movies. There are two types of viewers. 1 just watcher. 2 deep watcher As far as we talk about "just viewers/watchers, it take to dramas just for entertainment and just a fiction not real, but deep watcher are those who takes it seriously and attach its feeling and emotions with dramas and he deadly believes in dramas and connects it's real-life with a central character of that drama or movie. He adopts its methods and manners. In the same way, like that drama, there come ups and downs in his real life. A little child looks, it’s around here and here, it sees what is happening around him. He observed in the atmosphere and acquire good and bad from family as well as from society. When he grows up, enhances his interest in movies, dramas, and cartoon. There he sees unethical habits and adopts them. The adolescent is the age in which character build and self-confident is formed and people in this age can understand from books neither from anyone’s advice nor from what anyone has said. But they just react to what they are seeing in movies, in dramas, in society. They copy by watching other people doing right or wrong. The thing that plays a vital role in its life is modeling means doing, acting, reacting, and behaving by watching others, that may be in its family members, that may be in society or on TV. They learn how to eat, how to behave with elders and younger only by watching peoples. If someone’s child is rude to someone that doesn’t mean that he is rude by birth. NO! Remember that by birth no one born rude or behavior. It was taught by its family, society, or by dramas and movies. He learns all the things from family, society and TV, and he accepts all that manner and methods. In this way they have selected their role model by watching them, they can be teachers, parents, and TV actors, etc. The essential thing is that self-esteem is more influenced, it getting low. These dramas are promoting immorality and causing a lot of problems like suicide cases, depressing cases and raping cases, etc. This is all arising due to unethical dramas. You are well known than me that what is actually playing on the Pakistani TV channel. These Pakistani unethical, reprobate and licentious dramas are completely destroying people educationally, culturally, ethically, morally, traditionally, and psychologically. These Pakistani dramas lead not toward education but only toward the illegal and sinful activities. This, you can see in a lot of dramas like “band khirkiyon ke pechhy”, as this drama has nonsense name so are the scenes also unethical/ unconscionable. You can imagine what will be in this drama just reading its name (band khirkiyon ke pechhy). You may have seen American seasons like “Revenge”, “Private” “Practice” and “Desperate Housewives”, this drama is also inspired by them. We know that these things are common for Americans, it’s their culture but not ours, it’s not Pakistani culture and the Pakistani drama industry has need know this, that this is Pakistan, not America here we have different culture and traditions as compare to British and America. Similarly, another drama (Rishtay Udoray) in which how traditions blew up and here now come new extender version of rishtay udoray, in which a sister falls in love with his brother in law and get pregnant without marriage (illegitimate child). What is a good message from this type of drama to viewers? No any limit to shamelessness in this drama and you may have heard about this nonsense drama named “ kitni Girhain Baaki hain.” In this drama same-gender attach to same-gender (lesbian; a gay woman), they show their feeling for the same gender. One girl is attached to another girl, she shows her feeling but not for a boy but for a girl. Now, these nonsense dramas attract people toward sin and vulgarity, and you surely heard another unethical drama “Chup Raho”. there was great repetition on it, not to play it on the TV screen, but still, it was played on TV channel. All in 28 episodes this unethical and nonsense thing showed again and again. The theme was like this that a brother in law ferociously abuses his sister in law and keep on illegal relationships with his sister in law. What is this? What this all happening in dramas even in Pakistani? Is this Pakistani culture? How do they want to convey a good message to the viewers? What do they want to teach to society through these dramas? Let’s suppose, if they punish him in the last 5-10 minutes in the ending of dramas then what positive message they left for the viewer because the viewer has still that thought which is shown in beginning, the viewer has noticed starting scene not ending. I don’t think that he will get any positive message from this drama except sinful. Just because of these dramas, there arise many cases of these types in real life like abuses with little innocent girls, with maiden and women. Every year we hear many cases that someone is viciously wronged with someone and murdered. God’s sake promotes good dramas ( with good purpose which at least entertain someone) but don’t play these abusive plays on the Pakistani TV channel. Play those plays(dramas) which show a positive image for society and can be seen with family. And here is this same thing repeated in another drama “Dil Ruba”. this drama is also full of shameless scenes Now here comes the father racist dramas named “Udaari”. You may have seen a lot of widow women whose daughters are growing up or may be grown up and many offers have given to her for remarriage. She thinks that she and her daughters have no any supporter and that’s why she finally accepts that offer and ready to remarry. In some cases happened like this that the man who marries with the widow is not interested in her but interested in her daughters. I am not saying that all are the same and it happens with everyone. No! But in rare cases, these issues arise just by watching these nonsense dramas. Many daughters being brutally hunted by their step-father. In the same way, these types of scenes and stories happened in this drama “Udaari”. this drama has crossed the boundary of immorality, unethical, vice, and wicked. My words fall short while describing it, my words do not accompany me in telling it. I have run out of words. The drama has a very shameless and violated theme. It has altogether destroyed ethics and it has mentally demolishing message for the viewers. You may have seen/ heard about this drama that a father has a bad eye on his step daughter and once he has raped her. These dramas “Udaari”, “Chup Raho”, “Jalan”, “Ishqiya”, “Deewangi” and “Pyar ke sadqay” put the concept in mind to commit crime. Otherwise, by birth, no one is born with criminal thought. How to improve your English language skills?

When we talk about improving English what exactly do we mean? Is it enhancing your vocabulary, learning new phrases and idioms, understanding grammar, improving your comprehension, identifying common errors, working on translation skills, understanding analogies, getting grip on punctuation, learning how tenses are structured and how they are “used”, knowing about sentence structures? Yes, all of these and a lot more. It’s a complete package and there’s no overnight, sauna-belt solution to this English conundrum. All these things plus “style”. Let me interject this piece here with some words on style and we will revert to basics later. Style, in my opinion, is most commonly ignored while teaching English and students are also not cognizant of this fact that what separates men from boys is style and expression -- you may have some excellent thoughts in your head but the way you express them makes all the difference. What makes an ordinary chef a master chef?

Among other things, style and presentation. Find your voice, your style of writing and practice it to perfection. Be so good they can’t ignore you. But what is style? Have something to say, and say it as clearly as you can. That is the only secret of style. There are many things that make writing interesting and hard to ignore but, for me, the most important of them is how you structure your sentences. An excerpt from the internet is pertinent here: Think about how primary-school children write: it’s all short sentences. I got up at seven this morning. Then I had some breakfast. Then I walked to school. Then I had Maths. I don’t like Maths. Then I had English. That was better… no wonder most people get the idea at that age that long sentences are good, and short sentences are bad. When we pause to think about it, we know it isn’t true, and yet it’s still a practice that we slip into: trying to make our writing sound better by making our sentences longer. Had that primary-school child been a more skilled writer, they might have written: “I got up at seven this morning. After I had some breakfast, I walked to school. I had Maths, which I don’t like, then English. That was better.” Two of the sentences are still just as short as in the original, while the rest are longer – and it’s the variety that makes it so much more readable. Remember Varied sentences good, long sentences bad. You do not create a style. You work, and develop yourself; your style is an emanation from your own being. Work on yourself first and let’s start from the basics to find your own voice in the later stages of development. To the basics, we return. Get a firm grip on grammar – a grip so firm that your thoughts are automatically articulated into sentences of your liking and structures of your choice. Know that there are four basic structures of English sentences and you must know how to use them. So, do you know your way around verb tenses, grammar and punctuation and can avoid the common pitfalls? Congratulations, you have qualified to be an “aspirant”. To become an officer now you need to polish your skills with toil, tears and sweat. You read a newspaper and don’t understand what’s going on? There are certain words you haven’t heard before, a certain phrase perhaps? Make a diary and start writing new words with their Urdu and English meanings, identify which part of speech they belong to — noun, verb, adjective et al.— and use the word in a sentence or rewrite the sentence you have just read from the newspaper or book. We need practical vocabulary and there is no need to learn those SAT or GRE words. I never did. Just used the technique mentioned above and built a sizable lexicon for myself that is practical and usable. What to observe while reading? Don’t just look for new words; rather, observe the sentence structures, order of words, identify parts of speech, see how paragraphs are constructed, and check the coherence and clarity of thought. There’s much to observe, learn and imitate. Read good authors and imitate their style. Read a thousand books and your words will flow like a river. You have to read good to write good. There is no alternative to this. Whoever tells you otherwise is selling something—maybe his notes. RAIMAL RAJA
